The Vidar-36 SSK is BMT Defence Services' high capability, long range conventional submarine. In an effort to promote both the submarine design and the advanced engineering capabilities of BMT DSL, they approached Defence Imaging to create a promotional CGI video and various illustrations.
Working directly with the senior naval architect for the project we used BMT's engineering three dimensional CAD data for the main hull-form and some inner structures. Liaising closely with the design team, we upgraded the quality of the 3D elements to the standard required for 3D animation and the 3D illustrations.
A multi-stage process involving the production of storyboards and animatics (for approval) was undertaken before we embarked on the final video production. During the project, we also worked closely with BMT's marketing team to ensure all aspects of the new vessel’s performance and characteristics were covered in the final 4 minute animation.
The final video featured animated humans as combat frogmen, a sub-surface SLCM (Submarine Launched Cruise Missile) launch, twin AUV launch and encounters with both a surface ship and hostile Scorpène submarine. Many aspects of this video required the deeper knowledge and research that Defence Imaging provide.
In addition to the animated video, we were also asked to re-purpose the 3D model to create detailed cutaway images for posters and large format marketing assets. These were subsequently used by BMT for international marketing and design awareness; this included marketing PDFs, exhibition displays, press releases, Youtube and various trade exhibitions including DSEI in London.
The Vidar computer generated video and the overall project was extremely well received by the senior naval architects and marketing team at BMT Defence Services.
